Greetings from the director

The Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Museum opened in September 2020 in the Futaba district of Fukushima Prefecture. The museum’s purpose is to record and preserve the memories of the unprecedented triple disaster – earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident – that took place in March 2011.  The events that took place and lessons learned are being shared throughout Japan, and abroad, to help in the prevention and mitigation of disasters. As of June 2023, the Museum has welcomed over two hundred thousand visitors.

The current special exhibition is titled ‘People’s Stories in The Nuclear Disaster’. Experiences of the nuclear disaster vary depending on the region they lived, their age, and their position. This special exhibition uses timeline, maps, and videos to show the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

We hope that this special exhibition will deeply engage museum visitors and help them to always remember the nuclear disaster that took place in Fukushima.
